Interview at the Cassino Rehabilitation Centre
A sunny day in October some students from our school went to visit the rehabilitation centre in Cassino, for the project ‘Health and Wellness’. It is a famous in Italy because it is one of many similar centres founded by Don Mazzi who is a famous teacher and philosopher. Here there are many young people with various addiction problems. We interviewed Antonio who is a twenty-nine year old drug and alcohol addict.
Erica and Giada | When did you start drinking? |
Antonio | I started drinking soon after my mother died of cancer when I was five years old. For me it was a trauma. It all be began because there was always a bottle of Wine my grandparents’ table. |
Erica and Giada | so your grandparents let you drink despite your age? |
Antonio | yes, it is normal for the elderly. |
Erica and Giada | when did drinking start to be an addiction? |
Antonio | when I was about 14 years old I couldn’t do anything without a drink. |
Erica and Giada | when did you start taking drugs? |
Antonio | I started when I was still at school, because I was always on my own and i didn’t have any friends. Thanks to the drugs I made some friends. |
Erica and Giada | how did these friends make you feel? |
Antonio | I felt very important and cool for the first time in my life. |
Erica and Giada | in the meantime how was the situation at home ? |
Antonio | I used to argue with my father all the time. He used to scorn me and praise my sister because she is beautiful, intelligent and perfect. I have always been jealous of her. |
Erica and Giada | when did you realise that you needed help? |
Antonio | When I lost my father and I understood that I had no one left. The worst thing was that I feel that I killed my father because I told him that I wished he had cancer and just one month later he was diagnosed with cancer and he died five days after. |
Erica and Giada | how long have you been here? |
Antonio | Five months |
Erica and Giada | and how long does the treatment last? |
Antonio | 18 months. |
Erica and Giada | do you think it is working? |
Antonio | Yes, because just one month ago I wouldn’t have been able to have done this interview.
|
In conclusion we understood that Antonio was traumatized by his mother’s death and didn’t have any self-esteem. For this reason he looked for comfort in alcohol and drugs. Thanks to centres like this one people like Antonio can find help and solve their problems.
